Mission, Values & Approach
To empower and support neurodivergent young people through community and togetherness
Our Approach
Empowerment – We focus on providing opportunities for neurodivergent young people to have personal agency over the activities they engage in.
Neurodiversity-affirming – We focus on meeting the individual where they are and acknowledging their unique strengths, interests, and support needs.
Special interests – Working with special interests, we give neurodivergent young people the opportunity to explore and develop skills centred around an activity they enjoy.
Shared interests – We focus on the special interests that our clients have in common as a way to facilitate social connections and bonding.
Supportive environment – We foster a supportive environment in which our clients can feel safe and supported to be themselves and make social connections.
Mentor and guide – We offer our clients guidance and support when they need help.
Evidence-based approach – We aim to integrate our care approach with the best available research, such as the following teaching and learning pedagogy:
- Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development: We scaffold support in a way that focuses on the client’s unique capacity and development.
-
- Gradual release of responsibility: We support our clients in the development of new skills and gradually allow them to become more autonomous as they gain confidence.
-
- Congruent communication: We aim to communicate in a way that does not belittle the clients, and addresses the situation, rather than the person.
-
- High impact teaching strategies: we incorporate relevant best practise teaching strategies such as setting goals, structuring sessions, communicating clearly, collaborative learning, questioning, and feedback. .
