With the support of the Reservoir Neighbourhood house and the Northern Autism Network, a collaboration was formed to develop a pilot for a social gaming program – the Youth Gamers program – for neurodivergent young people and a parent/carer support group. The pilot was submitted to the Darebin Council to be approved for a grant.
February 2022
The Youth Gamers’ program got the green light to go ahead in November 2021 to commence in February 2022. The program was a success with both participants and parents/carers and continued to run through to end of the school term 4 2022.
August 2022
While the Youth Gamers program was a success we had issues with the tech avaliable at the Reservoir Neighbourhood house, it was old and outdated. We also realised the potential to support young neurodiveregent people isolated from the community. Thus, the Reservoir Neighbourhood House, the Norhern Autism network and myself, in collaboration, worked on a grant through the Melbourne Revitilisation scheme to refurbish the computer room.
The Northern Autism Network and myself were interviewed by the Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing for an informative short video.
February 2023
The grant was approved and I was able to personally reburbish the Reservoir Neghbourhood House computer lab to suite the needs of the Youth Gamers program, patrons of computers classes and the general public. The Youth Gamers program was equipped with high-end gaming PCs, 2 commercial grade 3D printers and 2 VR headsets.
May 2023
The success of the program caught the attention of Amaze. The Northern Autism Network and myself worked with Amaze to develop a video outlining tips and hints for parents with children who enjoy gaming.
August 2024
Towards the start of 2024 I moved to Bendigo. At the start of August I began preparing to run Minecraft, Tech and Lego programs out of the Long Gully community centre.
